T-Mobile uses e-learning for SAP rollout

When One 2 One re-branded and re-launched as T-Mobile UK to become the UK's third largest telecommunications operator, it was vital that as little disruption as possible was caused to its service.

With over 5,500 employees and a personnel growth rate of 84%, T-Mobile handles over 260 million calls a week, and when the re-launch necessitated rolling out SAP Corporate Project Management software immediately there was no time for classroom-based staff training.

Flexible, individualised, and hands on e-learning

The solution needed to be flexible, carried out at the learner's own pace and preferred time and, ideally, provide some hands-on experience of the system, something that classroom training would not permit. All this despite the fact the system was still in development!

e-Learning would offer an opportunity to cover the entire training process on a new IT system. Trainees could be introduced to the SAP system then led through simulation scenarios before being given a chance to practice.

'Try It / Show Me'

For a rapid, effective solution, T-Mobile turned to Brightwave. With proven experience in developing quality interactive online learning to tight deadlines, Brightwave applied its tried and tested 'Try It / Show Me' approach to learning software that had worked for large organisations before. Both sides were keen to continue an already successful collaborative relationship, with T-Mobile providing the subject matter expertise and Brightwave driving the development.

Practising daily tasks before accessing the system

The result was a series of scenario-based exercises, all available online. These allowed learners to practise core tasks on the SAP software the week before they actually had access to it. Each scenario sets the learner a task. They can select 'Try It' if they think they know how to do it – or they can choose 'Show Me' to be walked through the correct procedure.

David MacRaild, e-learning consultant with PricewaterhouseCoopers who was responsible for the training said: "I knew Brightwave wouldn't let us down. They have again succeeded in delivering a highly professional and effective product."
