Employees are "Back on Track" with award winning Virgin Atlantic Manual Handling course

Did you know the discs in your back are like doughnuts? Too much pressure and you end up in a bit of a mess! Virgin Atlantic employees are taking the opportunity to learn about how to reduce the chance of back pain.

Overview

  • Exceptional early user results highlight a positive change at Virgin Atlantic
  • 98.8% of learners completed and passed the assessment
  • Nearly 80% of learners are putting their knowledge straight into practice
  • Immediate results achieved for employees' welfare and business efficiency.

The background

Brightwave was commissioned by Virgin Atlantic to design a course to substantially raise cross-organisational awareness and reduce workplace injuries due to manual handling.

The solution

Brightwave developed an innovative portal for the 9000 strong, primarily young, international workforce of Virgin Atlantic including office, airport, and engineering staff.

"I was actually excited by the course. It brought back memories of visiting a Ripley's Believe it or Not museum as a child, and the information captivated me."s actually excited by the course. It brought back memories of visiting a Ripley's Believe it or Not museum as a child, and the information captivated me."

Using powerful key messages as hooks for each interactive learning piece "Back on Track" successfully overcomes learner barriers, educates the audience and encapsulates the Virgin brand. Story-telling is at the heart of the course building on strong cultural and visual references of the target audience.

The Weakest Disc assessment (under the sinister guidance of Anne Robinson's twin sister) ensures learners understand the impact of the material on their day-to-day life and provides full compliance for Virgin Atlantic.

"Kudos to the designers of "Back on Track". They got it spot on."

The benefits

Exceptional pilot results highlight a positive culture change at Virgin Atlantic with 98.8% of learners completing and passing the assessment.

Nearly 80% of learners are putting their knowledge straight into practice ensuring an immediate result for employees' welfare and business efficiency.

The investment in training will pay dividends annually as new and existing staff tap into "Back on Track". Pauline Reeb, e-Learning Solutions Manager at Virgin Atlantic said:

"We asked Brightwave to create a truly engaging and effective e-learning course and they totally delivered on the brief, developing a course that has changed attitudes and behaviour towards back-health."

"Providing a safe working environment and meeting compliance regulations is an ongoing priority at Virgin Atlantic. By giving employees the tools and understanding we can ensure they follow best practice in developing good posture and healthy lifting techniques."

Award winning

The innovative course beat stiff competition taking home "Best in e-Learning" at the 2008 Digital Media Awards (DiMAS) which recognise and reward passion and creativity in the digital media sector in the South of England.
