With an old health and safety training package in place that had received no regular maintenance or support for a long time, BT decided that it was time to update its mandatory programme to a fresh-looking and intuitive e-learning course.
Because the old package had become difficult to use, BT wanted to create an engaging and flexible course that didn't take up too much time for the learners to complete and could offer an online assessment at the end of the programme. The emphasis had to be on the learning experience rather than just passing a test. And with a high assessment pass-rate set from the beginning, the BT and Accenture training teams wanted to raise the bar with regard to best practice in health and safety training.
"We chose Brightwave because of its partnership approach and its track record of developing effective e-learning programmes," says David Wallington, Head of Group Safety at BT.
"We opted for e-learning because it is future-proofed, flexible, and directly delivered to every user's PC."
"It is also easy to track, and the results are integrated with our learning management system and training database so that we can keep accurate records for every single employee."
The new training programme takes no more than an hour to complete and it has been designed to target behaviours rather than teaching rules and policies.
David explains some of the lessons learnt: "Clever technology on its own doesn't make people learn - it's the good quality content and the intelligent ways of holding the learner's attention that help people take in and retain information."
